NEWS Earth Day Special

22 April is Earth Day. How are you planning to demonstrate your stand for cleaner energy and a greener environment?

If you are purchasing a regular priced item at The Body Shop, note that you will enjoy a 15 per cent discount* when you refuse a shopping bag. With the number of shopping bags that we accumulate and discard each time a purchase is made, all of us can save more trees and reduce our carbon footprint by refusing a bag from the store and putting the purchases into our carry bags if they fit, or a recyclable carrier that can be slipped into our carryall.

*This discount excludes gift sets and new limited edition makeup collection by Leona Lewis. Valid only from 22-25 April, 2013, while stocks last. Terms and conditions apply.

History of Earth Day
Following the 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, a student anti-war movement inspired the enforcement of the environmental protection onto the American national political agenda. 85 Americans were hired to promote events across the United States on 22 April. That was when 20M Americans demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment on the streets, parts and auditoriums. Over time, it went global in 1990 drawing 200 million people in 141 countries into this movement.

At the turn of the millennium, the focus of Earth Day turned to global warming and a push for clean energy. And since 2010, on its 40th anniversary, Earth Day was re-established as a day for people to demonstrate their commitment. If you remember in 2012 “A Billion Acts of Green” launched an international, 1-million tree planting initiative with Avatar director James Cameron.

Today the focus remains on the pursuit for a clean environment with increasing urgency, as the damages of climate change manifest every day. Earth Day organization, invites everyone to be a part of Earth Day and “discover energy you didn't even know you had, and channel it into building a clean, healthy, diverse world for generations to come.”

GOING GREEN IS A GLOBAL EFFORT NOT LIMITED TO ONE DAY

In an effort to reduce carbon footprint in the world, many companies have committed to reduce carbon emission in the production of their products, furniture designers commit using unprocessed wood and cosmetics companies have committed to using green materials too. Simply Beauty look at two of these companies.

With this call to reduce carbon footprint, there are furniture designers and companies who have made reducing carbon footprints a part of their company motto and this commitment is not confined to Earth Day.

The term carbon footprint was first used in 1999. It refers to the amount of greenhouse gases and specifically carbon dioxide emitted by something (as a person's activities or a product's manufacture and transport) during a given period.

Because of this, there are more green furniture, or Eco furniture with sustainable designs or eco-friendly materials available. Well-known green furniture designers include Emeco (www.emeco.net/) and Knu (www.getknu.com/knuWeb/).

Available on our little island is Maruni made by Japan’s leading classic furniture company Maruni Wood Industry Inc. Exclusively distributed in SE Asia and retailed locally by Atomi (Mandarin Gallery Level #04-27), Maruni is durable ergonomic as well as eco-friendly furniture, manufactured with environmentally-friendly methods. And from end of March, collections created will use only certified material by FSC and PEFC such that timber is sustainably produced and marketed. Below is a list of Maruni pieces that will be showcased at this year’s annual Salone Internazionale del Mobile exhibition in Milan, Italy.

On the on-going basis, fans of The Body Shop are encouraged to return empty bottles for recycling. Their other green efforts include using PET bottles with a minimum of 60 per cent recycled content, not using PVC product packaging, and packaging that are made with 100 per cent recycled paper and printed with water-based inks.

All The Body Shop stores are also progressively refitted to improve their energy efficiency. Examples include new lighting inclusive of store signs to reduce energy use.

In addition, The Body Shop has an eco-conscious standard mooted in 2010. This symbol appears on products that meet the company’s stringent set of environmental criteria of respecting the aquatic environment, level of biodegradability and limited packaging waste. The Body Shop Rainforest Hair Collection is the first range from The Body Shop to meet this standard.
